Spotify Begins Testing TikTok Style Video Feed On IOS

Spotify is beginning to test a new TikTok-like ‘Discover’ feature on its iOS app. The company is beta testing a vertical video feed that users can scroll through on the app.

This feature was first discovered by Chris Messina and then reported on by TechCrunch. Messina tweeted a video of the newly implemented Discover tab on the Spotify app. He described the feature as a “pared down version of a TikTok-style feed”.

Not only that, @Spotify Discover is basically a pared down version of a TikTok-style feed of vertical music videos (likely using their canvas format) that you can like or skip.#NewSpotify pic.twitter.com/hpOEZ8v9bl

As it appears in the video, the Discover tab can be found as a fourth tab at the bottom of the screen. Once accessible, users can scroll through the feed and like individual videos. A three-dot menu icon is also included where users can find additional options for each song.

A Spotify spokesperson provided a statement to TechCrunch, confirming the testing of this feature. At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience,” the spokesperson said. “Some of those tests end up paving the way for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning. We don’t have any further news to share at this time.”

Spotify appears to be building off its Canvas feature, which artists can use to have their videos play alongside their music. TechCrunch notes that the videos within the Discover feed as the same ones used through Canvas.

Spotify has joined other platforms in which a TikTok-style feed has been implemented. Of course, Instagram has seen a lot of success with its Reels. Snapchat has its Spotlight feed as well. Recently, Netflix began testing a similar feature aimed at kids’ programming and discoverability.
