ATLANTA — Well, it worked once.
The Dodgers will start Corey Knebel again in Game 1 of their National League Championship Series against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. The right-handed reliever also started Game 5 of the NL Division Series on Thursday in San Francisco as an “opener” for Julio Urias.
Knebel pitched a scoreless inning in that game. Right-hander Tony Gonsolin is available to pitch “bulk” innings against the Braves on Saturday. He did not pitch during the five-game NLDS against the Giants.
The choice of Knebel in NLCS Game 1 is an indication that Max Scherzer is not ready to start two days after throwing 13 pitches in the ninth inning of NLDS Game 5 two days ago. Scherzer came out of the bullpen to close out the series and earn his first career save.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts had said “the plan” was for Scherzer to start Game 1 against the Braves as long as he felt ready after working out Friday night at Truist Park.
If Scherzer does not pitch in Game 1, he will likely start Game 2 in Atlanta, moving Walker Buehler back to Game 3 on Tuesday afternoon in Los Angeles. That would give Buehler six days of rest after his NLDS Game 4 start, the first time in his career that he started on short rest.
Buehler has also been a more successful pitcher at Dodger Stadium (22-6, 2.30 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, .190 batting average against) than on the road (18-7, 3.63 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, .225 batting average against). h2 data-curated-ids="" data-relation-type="automatic-primary-section"">
